Choose Black Lamp Shades For Balancing Energy

With Oriental home decors becoming common, black lamp shades are also growing in popularity. Black shades are ideal and go well with the concept of balance and the requirement of Feng Shui.

The concept was common in ancient China and is now followed in many homes across parts of Asia. Americans are now finding the need to rely on color to bring in the much needed balance of energy in their homes and work places.

The relevance of color plays a large role in the selection of lamp shades these days as many home owners are trying to understand the mysteries behind ancient Chinese beliefs.

Each color has a separate type of vibration that ends up releasing various forms of energy. The Earth, according to ancient Chinese philosophy, is made up of five elements that require proper balancing for greater harmony with the environment.

The color black represents water which means strength, but it is also known in ancient Chinese texts as something which also has an element of darkness. Your home interior could have different colors on walls with varying shades in some areas.

And black is an elegant color that can also bring loads of grandeur to the space. Black lamp shades are available in different shapes and sizes along with a wide array of designs.

When you go looking for black shades, your home decor and the colors of your furnishings and upholstery should be foremost in your mind. You can use different color shades for lamps depending on what mood you would like in a certain room. The fabric could be made of paper, linen or silk and all of them are be available in black. Shades are also available in the rich craftsmanship of glass as well.

Black lamp shades are ideally suited for places like bedrooms and hallways where darker shades are typically preferred.

Another major advantage with black is that it is easy to maintain and dark colors don't fade with time.

Just make sure you get the right size and shape for the room. It could be oval, bell shaped, rectangular or square. Be sure to coordinate the other features to blend in with black. The result will be a more classic look to the living area. And if you want to add a little color (and your other furnishings will match) you can get gold or silver lining to add a little additional elegance.

How to Make Chandelier Lamp Shades

If you are not happy with the choice of ready made chandelier lamp shades available in your local lighting store and online, you might like to consider making your own. This is not as difficult as it sounds and if you like craft work you will have a great time designing and making your own shades. It is also an ideal solution if you like designer items in your home but you are unable to afford designer prices and of course, you will have something unique that cannot be found everywhere else.

1. Decide Your Base

Decide whether you will use and decorate existing shades or whether you will make new ones from scratch. If making new ones, work out what size of shade you need by measuring the existing shades or by experimenting with creating paper shades of various standard size shades to see which size would work well. Look for frames in the right size in your local craft shop or purchase online.

2. Design Your Cover

Decide what you will use to cover your lamp shades. This might be something simple like wallpaper or wrapping paper in an interesting design or a fabric you love. You may also decide to cover your shades in patterned or plain fabric. Remember that plain lamp shades cam always be embellished.

3. Cover Your Base

Cover your existing lamp shades or lamp shade frames with your chosen materials. Glue in place using a glue gun folding in the edges to neaten them. Fabric may need to be stiffened by using iron on backing. (Apply this after you cut the fabric otherwise you will have more difficulty cutting the shape. If necessary, paper can also be stiffened by gluing onto thin card. If covering a shade in fabric, in addition to applying glue, stitch the fabric in place with small stitches around the top and bottom of the frame to secure into place.

4. Add Decoration

If you have used a patterned fabric or paper you will probably not need much in the way of decoration although you might like to add a braid trim around the edges in a coordinating color. If you have made a plain shade however you can really go to town adding beads, sequins, fringing and the like. Your glue gun will come in handy once again for attaching anything you desire to your shade. Use your imagination and create something very special and unique but remember that you will have to replicate the process for each individual shade so make sure you don't run out of trimmings.

Proper Lamp Shade Cleaning - Clean Your Lamp Shade With Care

We all have lamps at home and most of them, if not all, have lamp shades. They are beautiful but also need proper maintenance in order to remain so. This is because dust is constantly building up on the lampshades and unless it is removed, eventually will leave permanent marks on the pieces which will greatly reduce their lifespan.

There are some easy steps you can do to clean and maintain your lamp shades to remain in good standing and pretty for everyone to see and saving you money in the long run as the lampshade will be there for your for many years ahead. There is another reason why proper cleaning is needed. By having layers of dust on the shade, it will basically reduce the light that comes through it and will make your life more difficult when it comes to reading or whatever task you are trying to do under the lamp. Of course each lampshade is made of different materials, so they all need proper - yet individual care.

Some of the most common materials are fabric, paper and glass and they all need a different type of cleaning procedures.

The fabric lamp shades are very common among many households and they make for beautiful room enhancers due to their multitude of colors that the fabrics can have. They are also able to perfectly match the ambient by having the same or similar fabric color and pattern that is also existing on window drapes, on chair seats and on the table cloth.

To clean the fabric lampshade you need to first unplug the lamp and then remove the lampshade. Actually this firs step is valid for any lampshades you want to clean. Use a soft brush to remove the dust by using smooth strokes coming from the top of the shade right down to the bottom. If you find any rips or tears in the fabric, do not use the brush as it will case just more tears and possibly ruin your piece completely. Also clean the inside of the fabric for proper care. Depending on the material type, you can even put it in warm and soapy water and then in clean cool water that removes the soap. Then leave it to dry.

Paper lamp covers need dusting only as they are rather fragile due to the nature of the material. All you need is dust from the top of to the bottom in easy strokes. Don't forget to do the inside of it as well.

Those made of glass are really beautiful and elegant. Also they are very easy to maintain and clean. Just like for the previous types, dusting once a week is in order to keep them clean. Then you can use soapy warm water for additional cleaning with a cloth. Then rinse the water off with clean water so the soap gets removed. Dry them with a soft and dry cloth. For each of these types make sure you don't plug the lamp back in until they completely dry.

Many of these lampshades are attached to a beautiful antique desk lamp and particularly the antique brass desk lamp is one that has some gorgeous patterns and motifs on them.

London the wheel clamping capital of the Universe

I have lived in London for all of my life (38 years)
Yeah, there is no doubt it is a fabulous city, well what i have seen of it anyway.
Living so close to the city makes the average Londoner a little lazy when it comes to visiting the tourist attractions that London has to offer and i guess any traveler who has spent 2 weeks visiting our fine capital city would have probably seen more of London than i ever have 8) I guess i visited more popular places when i was a child and often on school trips so i guess it was mandatory for me to attend a school day trip whether i wanted to or not.Personally i would suggest that you visit the city in the evening after all you haven't come to London to sunbathe have you?
Seeing the sites of London is highly recommended but do not expect to be able drive around the city and park your car outside of your desired attraction. (no chance)
London supplies it's visitors (free of charge) with several thousand 'ninja, moped riding traffic wardens'.I recommend using public transport such as buses and the London underground service as the roads are highly trafficked and if your were to win the 'parking lottery' and actually find a parking space, you would have to spend a huge lump of your winnings on the parking meter or car parking fees. But hey, don't let this deter you from coming, it really is a great city.Find out more about how to escape parking fines and wheel clamp fees at my blog.

Lamp Shades

Lamps are one of my favourite furnishings around my house and have been for many years. When I was a young boy my parents were not wealthy and struggled to provide for our family needs. Basic lighting was all our family had and we didn't give much thought to ambient lighting and we certainly never contemplated exotic topics like how to clean your lamp shades! No we just had a bare globe in each room and that was sufficient.

As I got older my parents prospered and suddenly lamps began appearing in our lounge room. I have vivid memories of a bright orange colored lamp shade on a wooden lamp stand that took pride of place in our lounge for many years. However items like desk lamps and bedside lamps never became a big part of our home furnishings. Mum would shop for many things but exotic lighting with brightly colored lamp shades rarely made it onto her shopping list.

It wasn't until I got married and left home that I discovered the world of lamps and what they can add to the house. Now we have multiple lounge lamps, bed side lamps and a lamp in my study.

And what do I love about lamps?

I love the sense of style that a lamp brings to a room. An elegant floor lamp adds class to a room giving it a welcoming vibe and a sense of rest. Stylish lamp shades also add color and vigour to the ambience of a room lifting it out of its beige funk. I also love the variety that lamps and their shades bring to a house. It's simply amazing the range of lamps and lamp shades you can buy today. It appears to me to be an explosion of creativity.

Another thing I love about lamps is the ambience they naturally produce with their soft, indirect light. I find it relaxing, especially in my study. I spend a far degree of my working life in my study which often includes early mornings and late nights. I find the ambient light of my stylish floor lamp much preferable to the bright ceiling light that seems to overpower me with its direct and piercing brightness.

Also I do love the relaxed atmosphere our bedside table lamps bring to the room where like everyone else I spend hours every night. Once again it's the ambient light that gets me! When I'm heading to bed after a long day I don't need bright lights glaring at me. I need rest, peace and calm. A well designed bedside lamp gives me that.

Lamps - I grew up without them but not I couldn't live without them!
